Be’ah closed down one of the biggest landfill sites in the country in Buraimi last week.
The site was spread over 1mn sq m. Be’ah has closed more than 200 traditional landfill sites across Oman. Dr Said al Touqi, director of Rehabilitation of Traditional Landfill in Be’ah, said, “We began the process of closing the landfill site in July last year in cooperation with the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources.
“The process involved reducing the amount of waste at the site by transferring it to other sites. The remaining waste was covered by a thick layer of soil.” Dr Touqi said that the site was closed due to several reasons.
“It was closed keeping in mind the environment and health of people residing in the nearby areas. Another reason was to prevent expatriate workers from collecting metal, plastic and paper for recycling purposes. The company has established infrastructure to get rid of solid waste by setting up modern landfill sites and transformer stations.”
