Hackathon

About the Hackathon:

We at be’ah are collaborating with other OIA companies to provide the opportunity to develop impactful solutions that drive the future of sustainability.

be’ah’s two key opportunities are:

1.    Utilization of Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste
2.    Develop Innovative and Cost-Effective Smart Waste Bins

1. Description of the challenge “Utilization of Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste”

be’ah is currently managing 31 Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste sites, 9 of the sites are processing sites that uses advanced crushers to produce materials from C&D waste. There is a tremendous opportunity to create value from processed C&D materials. Although our processed C&D material is ideal for civil construction, less than 50% of this valuable resource is currently being sold and utilized. We face a key challenge of Low Market Demand in which recycled C&D waste products, despite being high-quality and cost-effective, suffer from low sales and underutilization, especially in certain product categories.

Below are pictures of the materials that are produced from processing C&D waste (End products after treatment):

Your Mission:

Participants are tasked with developing innovative and marketable solutions to unlock the potential of utilizing the processed C&D material. Successful participants will get a chance to work with us to develop and commercialize their products and solutions.

2. Description of the challenge “Develop Innovative and Cost-Effective Smart Waste Bins”

Plastic waste occupies significant landfill space, which leads to environmental challenges and underutilization of valuable materials. To reduce landfill use and maximize plastic recycling potential, there is an urgent need for a smart collection system. The Smart Bin initiative aims to advance plastic collection and segregation at the source, ensuring high-quality feedstock for recycling industries.

These smart bins should feature multiple compartments designed to automatically identify and separate various types of plastic (e.g., PET, HDPE, PP, LDPE), offering an efficient solution for clean plastic collection. The initial rollout will begin in high-traffic locations such as schools, mosques, petrol stations, and sports venues, with plans for expansion across Oman. By collecting clean and segregated plastics, these bins will enhance local recycling efforts, providing essential materials for the manufacturing sector and driving sustainable practices.

Your Mission:

Participants are tasked with developing a smart collection system with bins featuring advanced technology capable of automatically identifying and separating various types of plastic, such as PET, HDPE, PP, and LDPE. By doing so, we aim to improve the efficiency of recycling efforts and create cleaner, more sustainable processes for the manufacturing industry. Successful participants will get a chance to work with us to develop and commercialize their products and solutions.
